The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is a professional accounting body established in 1965 with the primary aim of regulating the practice of accountancy and certifying accountants in the country.
To start your journey towards becoming a chartered accountant, you need to pass either of ICAN Professional Examinations or ATSWA Examinations.
- The ICAN Professional Examinations consist of 3 stages, with each stages offering 5 Subjects before moving to the next stage. They are:
- Foundation Level
- Skill Level
- Professional Level
- The Accounting Technicians Scheme for West Africa (ATSWA) examinations, offered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), This also consists of three stages and they are:
- ATSWA Part I
- ATSWA Part II
- ATSWA Part III
While these examinations cover fundamental accounting concepts, principles and ethics of Accounting as a profession, a candidate may decide to sit for just one paper at a time for sake of flexibility but not exceeding 10 Diets & 6 diets for ICAN Professional Exams and ATSWA Exams respectively, otherwise, all prior paper passed will be cancelled. Career Pathways
Pathways To Becoming A Chartered Accountant
- ATSWA ROUTE: This is one of the pathways to becoming a Chartered Accountant in Nigeria. It is designed for those who haven’t attended any tertiary institution, but suitable for those who have completed their Secondary school education.
- PROFESSIONAL ROUTE: This route is designed for Graduates of ICAN recognized tertiary institutions whether they have prior knowledge in Accounting or not.
Accounting Graduates: Those with a BSc or HND in Accounting can start from the Skills Level of ICAN, with exemptions that may be applied based on their degree.
- Non-Accounting Graduates: Those with a BSc or HND in disciplines outside Accounting will begin from the Foundation Level and they will have to pass all relevant exams before they can become Chartered.

Lecture requirements
While you may need to fulfill some requirements before you can apply and sit for the ICAN Examinations, you DO NOT need any such requirements to enroll into our Online Classes and start equipping yourself with relevant materials.
Be as it may, candidates enrolling classes with us should have some basic knowledege of computer skills and English language proficiency.
